Joyce - it was interesting to read your take on these. I saw the woman at the door not as help but as a friend or sister/aunt who helped out. I also took the surprise look on the characters' faces to mean that this person was, indeed, not expected - I figured that a teacher *would* be expected company (unless he showed up at a different time than expected).
ReplyDeleteThis does seem like a scene from a novel. I think that's why I had this set in the U.S. instead of England. I was thinking of American short stories from literature class. I may sound funny, but I think the middle-aged male in the picture has sort of a "American swagger" to his walk.
